British Values


Ashton on Mersey School prepares students positively for life in modern Britain and we promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

British Values is promoted throughout school life from one off large scale events to our day to day practice. Please find some examples below:

Democracy

  • At the start of each year form groups nominate Form and Sports captains to represent them. These pupils represent their peers and support the organisation of key events such as sports day.
  • Every year we take an active part in the local Youth Parliament elections in Trafford. This involves pupils being informed of their local candidates through form time and assemblies and casting their vote as part of this election process.
  • We also make sure we promote important democratic processes such as the UK Youth Parliament ‘Make you Mark’ ballot. This is the UK’s largest survey of young people’s views allowing pupils to ballot to shortlist what is debated in the House of Commons by Members of Youth Parliament. This was promoted in form time and all pupils were offered the opportunity to cast their vote.
  • Pupils focus on democracy as part of their character development curriculum. This is delivered through the social science curriculum and form time activities.
  • A mock general election was held in May 2017 to coincide with the national election, pupils really enjoyed this activity and learnt a lot about our political parties and voting system.

The Rule of Law

  • Pupils are taught about the laws of our country through the Social Science and form time curriculum. This topic is also covered through assembly themes.
  • Pupils and parents complete a ‘home school agreement’ at the start of each academic year. By signing this pupils, parents and the school are agreeing to the code of practice of the school.
  • There is a clear behaviour management policy which pupils are aware of and understand. This not only involves a system of consequences but also reward strategies.
  • Accountability is stressed to all including staff (Teacher Standards), students (Home School Agreement), and Governors.

Individual Liberty

  • Increasing liberty is afforded to students as they move up through the years, for example 6th Form students are allowed to leave the site at certain times.
  • There is a huge range of extra-curricular activities and clubs on offer which students can choose to participate in. For example an extensive extra-curricular sport timetable, as well as groups such as our LBGT, group, STEM club, debate club.
  • We have a debate club who meet on a weekly basis, this group have also taken part in Dean Trust debating competitions.
  • We have an Ashton on Mersey ‘Pupil Parliament’ made up of Departments, such as the Department for Pupils and the Department for the Environment. These groups take part in activities within school and are also a source of pupil voice. For example the Department of Pupils was consulted about changes to the school uniform and the Department for Teaching and Learning about our marking and feedback policy.
  • Students are encouraged to voice views in lessons and form time in a formative manner. Our form time programme provides extensive opportunity for group discussion and the sharing of ideas.
  • Pupils form an important part of our new staff interview process, we also complete regular pupil voice activities with them.

Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.

  • In school we promote the importance of tolerance of those with different faiths through our social science and form time curriculum.
  • Our RE curriculum covers large global religions and also looks at tolerance and understanding of different religions and faiths.
  • Religious understanding is promoted through our assembly themes.
