This week, the Climate Club used the money they have raised from selling plants to buy bulbs and had a BIG BULB PLANT OUT session on Tuesday. The pupils gathered lots of daffodils as well as some tulips and alliums in the hope that there will be a rush of colour in early spring. Dozens of bulbs were planted outside the library quad as well as some sprucing up of the wild garden. A few new plants have been added too in the hopes that we can attract even more wildlife and insect species onto school grounds. The pupils also had a ceremonial placing of their specially chosen hedgehog house which is now hidden away in the wild garden. We’re hoping that wildlife moves in soon! The Climate Club membership has grown and our new members are already getting stuck in sharing ideas and joining in the fun. Any interested pupils are encouraged to come along, new members are always welcome.

With football fixtures coming in thick and fast, our Year 8 team set us of on a positive start. They headed to Canon Slade and won 4-2. Goals from James D, Harry C, Mohammed H and Tyrone S. Despite playing on a difficult pitch, POTM Kyle C stood out with some fantastic footwork in midfield. Well done to Mr Stead and the team.

This week’s school assembly focused upon the human impact on the environment, with a focus on the affect of plastics upon eco-systems. As part of the school’s drive, pupils were made aware of the environment pod, who meet each Tuesday lunchtime in room 61. Over the past years the Environment Pod have established new re-wilding areas in school that have seen a change in the biodiversity in these areas, along with the future planned use to help pupil well-being. Pupils were made aware of future plans to reduce the schools carbon footprint along with ways to reduce wate and cardboard use in schools.

This week has seen the launch of the national apprenticeship program in the Sixth Form. On Monday evening, visitors from the Department of Education gave a presentation to students and their parents explaining the key features of the apprenticeship pathway and the benefits of this form of post-18 education and training. On Thursday over 60 Year 13 students attended a workshop on apprenticeships, learning how to apply, what to expect in the application process and how to effectively present themselves as attractive candidates. The event was extremely informative and made clear the ambition and resilience required from our students. The workshop gave a clear understanding of how to write successful covering letters and highlight their personal qualities and experiences. Thanks to our careers advisor Jeni Haworth for organising and leading the sessions.

Headlines to be proud of include the fact that a record 15 pupils achieved the top grade of a 9 in Maths with a further 15 pupils securing a 9 in English Language or Literature. 59% of pupils achieved a grade 5 (a strong pass) in English and Maths which is another school record.

After sealing the league title, the Year 11 football team played Wellington in the county cup final. After a fantastic performance, coming back from 2-0 down, the team managed to beat Wellington 3-2. In the hope of sealing the treble, they played Altrincham College in the Manchester Cup final. Unfortunately, they lost out by 1 goal. The game ended 4-3. On behalf of Mr Milner and the rest of the PE team, we would like to congratulate the Year 11 football team for their success this season on securing the double.

Ashton on Mersey School continues to have a strong partnership with Manchester United Football Club. The Manchester United Schoolboy Scholarship (MANUSS) program is a pathway for talented players to join the club from both near and far, with many players staying with host families. The school works closely with the club to support these young players in securing a high quality education alongside maintaining their statues as elite footballers. For example, MANUSS pupils often have adjusted timetables to accommodate additional training during the school day but receive compensatory education at alternative times. The alumni for this programme includes the likes of England internationals Marcus Rashford and Jess Lingard
We would like to wish our Year 11 MANUSS Class of 2024 the best of luck for their GCSE examinations and the rest of the cohort with their upcoming end of year assessments.

Pupils who took part in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge were awarded their certificates by Mrs Buckley this week. Jason and Joseph received a Bronze certificate, Marcel, Charlie and Hayden achieved Silver and a special mention to Abdullah who received the highest mark in the school and was awarded a Gold certificate. The top-scoring 50% of national participants are awarded Bronze, the top 75% achieve Silver and the top 92% (approximately) achieve Gold.

The Football Scholarship Programme has seen their most successful campaign to date in the 7 years it has been running. Multiple previous records for the programme have been broken including:
;AOC Championship Invitational League A Winners (The first league title ever)
;Greater Manchester Schools Cup Winners (First time the cup has been won, no other team has reached the final)
;Last 16 of the National Cup (The furthest ever and has over 250 teams entered nationally)
;Longest Win streak from any team with 10 back to back wins.

We haven’t had much of a spring yet, but there are signs of life in the meadow and orchard (or Rewilding Zone). Over the years this will bloom into a little woodland, dense with wildflowers and biodiversity. Seeing the first signs of growth in the last few weeks has been like a little ray of sunshine among the frequent and unpredictable rain, hail and wind.
Hopefully some of our GCSE and A-Level pupils will use the area to take well-being breaks while preparing for their exams!

Last weekend saw 51 of our pupils and staff take a coach ride to the big city. Pupils who had been to the capital before, pupils who knew all about the show Six! and those who just had specific land marks that they couldn’t wait to see chattered away as Miss Smyth took her seat as the journey’s DJ.

Over the past month pupils from KS3 and KS4 were given the opportunity to learn Ancient Greek at Ashton on Mersey School. Cordelia and Tegan from the University of Manchester delivered excellent sessions for our pupils. Pupils were very knowledgeable about Ancient Greek and had a vast understanding of gods and myths. During the course they learnt to use the Alphabet and by the end they will be able to translate long words without hesitation. It was wonderful to witness. At the end of the course pupils celebrated with loads of stickers and a certificate.

Wow! What a week this has been! After months of preparation, Shrek! The Musical performed at the Waterside Arts Centre on Wednesday and Thursday. We have had an absolute blast putting on this barnstorming, fast-paced, energetic show and we’re sure that all who attended will agree that the pupils really brought their A-game.
